SPADICE
(Surface Pattern Art & Design Interdisciplinary Collaborative Effort)

SPADICE is a creative hub that collaborates with local visual artists with special needs, students with special needs from the Rainbow Centre Margaret Drive School, crafters, musicians, designers, and local talents to create eco-conscious, unique products. Our mission is to design exclusive fabrics and handcrafted items inspired by Singapore's cultural heritage, art, and often-overlooked moments in life. We aim to create designs that draw inspiration from the depths of the ocean, the wonders of AI, and the mysteries of space.

We offer complete art journey experiences for participants with special needs, providing workshops in sketching, painting, character-designing, pattern-designing, printing, and crafting, culminating in the creation of finished 3-D products for sharing.

SPADICE believes in shaping a world where creativity, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility come together to create a brighter and more sustainable future.

I spent most of my childhood at my grandma’s dressmaking studio near Boat Quay, Singapore. I remember one of the rooms was converted into a storage space for textiles, the traditional multi-tier metal bolt storage racks and plywood planks in that room was my secret indoor playground, besides climbing and swinging in between structures,  I enjoyed playing with stacks of fabrics and nitty-gritty sewing stuff. Inspired by my mom (a seamstress) and wife (an arts and craft trainer), I am thrilled and passionate to incorporate sewing, crafting, and textile pattern designing into my artistic practices as well as community work.

I had designed the curriculums on “Narrative techniques for illustrated picture stories” and “Turning your doodles into unique characters” to facilitate the SPADICE* project as well as its online art gallery, the result was extremely encouraging after seeing the 3-D art products taken place and gives the illustration drawings a new form of life.

I have been working with kids, youths, and adults with special needs on multiple art and design collaborative projects since 2007 after graduating from the art university, and each unique project reinforces my belief in how illustration art could help one’s to discover and develop his/ her inner story as well as the imagination. Illustration art can do wonderful magic in helping you to connect with your own emotions and express them in symbolical and narrative visual language for sharing with the audiences.

Chun Chuan was one of the creators who had co-created the Under the sea (series one) surface pattern art & design. I am fascinated by how he perceived a symbolical scuba diving mask flowing in the mid of the ocean.

Tan Haur: May I know what first comes to your mind when you decide on drawing a scuba diving mask under the theme of “under the sea”?

Chun Chuan: I was having this thought that human plays a part in the marine ecosystem too, besides the existence of fishes, clams, ocean plants etc. The mask represents the person who can either be a marine conservationist or he can also be a marine life poacher. The latter is the destroyer as we all know, one who will bring extinction to some of the marine life.

It was amazing working with Sam Hong, a musician, on this SPADICE project! Sam's approach to his eel drawing demonstrated a marvelous visual rhythm, together with other motifs co-created by the rest of the collaborators, forming a vivid piece of graphical music to the soul.

Tan Haur: May I know what first comes to your mind when you decide on drawing the Yellowmouth Eel under the theme of “Under the sea”?

Sam Hong: Something, to me, unusual to the under the sea crowd. This species, when achieved adulthood, is usually known for its shyness from stronger predators but will turn ferociously hostile when provoked or threatened, to guard against intrusion in its territory. But when it was of a younger being, their cute look was deceptively appealing to the beholders.

There's a saying that the ocean makes us feel tiny, humbled, and inspired, and I truly admire the wisdom behind this statement and enjoyed working with the collaborators on the theme Under the sea for the SPADICE project. Yvonne Teng (musician) created one of the motifs (Sea angel) and shared with us her unique point of view:

Tan Haur: May I know what first comes to your mind when you were invited to draw a motif for one of the SPADICE projects' Under the sea?

Yvonne Teng: Initially I was thinking to draw the octopus. But thereafter decided to draw the sea angel instead. I think it’s their glow that attracted me. No matter how small and insignificant one may be. Each has its glow, its importance.

"Where it all began."

In the 60s and 70s, along the riverbank of Singapore River, not far off the old parliament house, there was a mix of residential shophouses and warehouses to cater for spice, rice, loose corn, coffee beans, textile, and rubber trading, coffee and food stalls, provisional shops, as well as different kinds of family-owned businesses. Strolling around the riverside area near the Clark Quay, Boat Quay, and Robertson Quay, you may see and feel the vibrancy of daily life like goods packed in sacks that arrived in the big tongkang (a type of boat used to carry goods along the river in the old day) and kids and housewives were busy picking up loose corn at the importers’ premises during daylight. After sunset, residents brought their chairs to relax and socialise near the riverbank, many were drawn and sat around the storyteller spotlighted with a faint kerosene lamp.

My mom worked for her family-owned business, and I spent most of my childhood at my grandma’s dressmaking studio near Boat Quay. I remember one of the rooms was converted into a storage space for fabrics, the traditional multi-tier metal bolt storage racks and plywood planks in that room were my secret indoor playground, besides climbing and swinging in between structures, I enjoyed appreciating stacks of fabrics printed with amazing graphical images and toying with nitty-gritty sewing stuff. Inspired by my mom (a seamstress) and wife (an art and craft trainer), I am thrilled and passionate to incorporate sewing, crafting, and textile pattern designing into my artistic practices as well as community work.
